Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL

Google pixel 3 in pixel 3xl are quite simply the most leaked Android phones of the year but as usual, don’t tell you the whole story nor do they even tell you the most interesting parts of the story.

Google didn't want to mess with what it had going with the pixel to in to excel but it did have to make a few changes where necessary to add features and modernize the phones a little bit the thing that strikes you the most about the pixel 3 and 3 Excel is that they’re nearly identical in size to the originals but what's changed about the designs that the entire outside metal band has gone to a gloss finish and that interacts with a new glass back that covers the entire back of the phone like we’ve seen with so many different manufacturers the difference with the pixels is that the bottom 2/3 have a matte edged coating that feels a lot like the pixel twos metal.

But allows pass-through for wireless charging and RF that matte glass back and glossy sides carries over into both sizes and there’s no exclusivity in colors here you get black or white or not pink in either the pixel 3 or 3 XL on the front of the phones you'll notice that displacers have been kept over from the pixel and 2 XL the smaller pixel 3just out of necessity has to be a little bit quieter than the 3 XL but both sounds really good setting them up on the new pixel stand wireless charger I think they sound about as good as a Googleome Mini which is pretty surprising when you consider the difference in size of these drivers, of course, there's still no headphone jack on either of these phones.

But they do come with USB Headphones in the box now and they’ve integrated many of the pixel buds features in terms of live translation and Google assistant functionality now how about the spec sheet inside those beautiful exteriors well as expected Google doesn't really play the specs game we get a bump of the processor up to a Snapdragon 845 and it's supported by the pixel visual core of course but everything else rounds out pretty much like the pixel 2 in to excel there ‘only 4 gigabytes of RAM in both phones and 64 gigabytes of bay storage.

But you can pay $100 extra for a 128 gigs the battery sizes have changed this year although in the pixel 3 excels case it’s going down to 34 30 milliamp hour bathe pixel 3 thankfully increase just shy of 10 percent to 29 15 milliamp hour that’s getting pretty darn close to being able to offer you some good battery life out of the smaller version of the phone so let's be honest the biggest talking point of the pixel 2 + 2 XL were just how bad their displays were considering their prices we let the pixel to slide just a little bit.

But the 2 XL had an unacceptably bad display Google knows this Google knows that it was unacceptable on their side as well and they've made a huge effort to improve the displays on both phones and actually make them extremely similar well despite being different sizes indifferent aspect ratios the Google pixel 3 XL has a 6.3 inch OLED display and yes it's got that big ole notch on the top and the pixel 3 has gone up to a 5.5inch display stretched to 18 by 9 so that it has more display in the exosome package as the pixel 2 both screens have been calibrated to be extremely accurate.

So when you switch it over to RGB mode you're going to see something that’s visually indistinguishable from perfect and that phrasing is extremely important because that's the kind of wording that Samsung uses for its displays and those displays are easily the best in the business whether you ‘relooking at the smaller pixel 3 or larger pixel 3 XL you're going to notice less color shifting from the white point and really solid brightness now they’re talking about 400 nits of brightness and doesn’t sound that bright.

But we’re talking about 400 nits for a full-screen image which should make the pixel 3 in pixel 3 Excel usable in direct sunlight we’ll have to wait and see for our full review Google also knows that the other main talking point about its older displays is image retention and bornite built in some new mitigations in software and in the panel quality itself to reduce burning by half Google’s hardware team is even working with the apps and software teams across the company to make sure that there's a mixture of dark and light navigation bars in the main Google apps so that it can reduce the chances that the navigation bar itself burns into the screen.

So Google is already making arguably the best smartphone cameras in the business with the year-old pixel 2in pixel to excel and so it's not messing with a good thing once again the biggest overarching point in the Google pixel 3 and 3 xl's camera is that the pixel visual core is being put to work the pixel visual core processes her + photos 40% faster means that you're not going to have to wait around after taking a bunch of photos before you can scrub through them pick the ones you like edit and share because it doesn't have a second camera it doesn't have the ability to just instantly start from a 2x and digital zoom from there.

But Google is using algorithms to follow how your hand is shaking when you're digitally zooming and using that oh is movement to layer together photos and give you a higher resolution image even though you’ve zoomed in maybe four six or eight times on that 12.2 megapixel sensor and if you happen to do digital zoom while you ‘reusing a tripod the camera actually moves the OIS manually to create the same effect Google is also improving low-light photography dramatically with feature called the intestine this basically processes like an HDR plus photo but focuses on brightening the image rather than improving that dynamic range.

So it takes multiple exposures and stitches them all together and bumps up the image but it retains a lot of the detail and colors as if it were a regular image rather than horologe is also stepping up its game in the front-facing camera department which surprising considering that the pixel 2 & 2 XL already took amazing selfies there are now dual eight-megapixel cameras on both sizes of the phone and one has a wide-angle fixed focus lens while the other one has a standard angle autofocus lens you can use both lenses together to take even better portrait mode with better edge detection because

It has spatial recognition or you can just switch between the regular and the wide-angle to get in your groups or locking on just your own face Google is also debuting a brand new feature it calls call screaming when a call comes in you get three options ignore answer onscreen you get a live transcription onto your phone showing what the person on the other end is saying and you can picket up at any time it just shows the kind of amazing live transcription and machine learning that Google is applying to everyday functions like stopping spam calls and yes just in case you were wondering all that happens locally on your device first of all it would just take too long to go over the internet.

But also there are some privacy concerns with your phone listening in and recording their know that that's all happening on the phone itself so how about pricing for a couple of phones that really haven’t changed all that much from their predecessors in terms of hardware or specs or software frankly Google is increasing the prices across the board the pixel three bumps up a hundred and fifty dollars it starts at $7.99 now and the Google pixel 3xl also steps up to $8.99 base and remember that's four gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of storage if you want 128 gigabytes to add $100 to each one now you're talking about $8.99 for the pixel 3 and $9.99the magic number just shy of a thousand for the pixel 3 Excel and Google isn’t expanding its retail partnerships or its carrier partnerships in the use you can buy them from Verizon you can buy them from Best Buy for Verizon or you can buy them from Google unlocked which is what?

So many of us like to do or of course through project by Google's own carrier that increased pricing and a bit of a squeeze on availability may turn some people off especially when you add it to the fact that these phones just haven’t really changed all that much from last year and Google isn't really playing the spec game or the hardware game in either respect but Google did make the improvements that we all begged them to coming from the pixel - we got a better display on both phones that's the exact same no matter which size you choose and that theme carries over to both phones in general the hardware is the exact same the features are the exact same even the look and feel and styling between the two are the exact same in neither case the pixel 3 and 3 Excel offers something that no other manufacturer can Google's integration with its software and services no bloatware no extra apps nothing that you don’t want just simplicity fluidity antiperformance know that the pixel 3 and 3 XL are not going to sell in the kind of numbers that Samsung expects or Apple expects and Google doesn't expect that either.

But it does think that the pixel 3 and pixel 3 Excel are the best expression of an Android phone with Google services in Google software and that's what I think as well after using the phones for just a couple of hours it felt right at home like IWars using the pixel or pixel - that may not be that exciting for anybody that’s trying to chase specs and hardware and new features but it's extremely exciting for me because I just loved the way that Google makes a phone well that's it for us for now with the Google pixel 3 & 3 XL but it's by no means the end of our coverage of these two phones these are going to be two of the hottest phones.
